late既表示过去，近来，晚了，也表示将来，最晚的时间。later是形容词late的比较形式，表示时间的先后，意为“较后的”、“较新的”，它能作形容词，也能做副词。late是迟到的意思，形容词。later是时间副词，之后，一会后。
late与later的区别：
1、late与later的区别主要是在意义上的。
2、late 一般形容词，表示的是迟的，晚期的，新近的意思 ，它也可以做副词，表示晚，迟，在晚期。
3、later则可以作为late的比较级形式，或者做时间副词表示随后，稍后，而表示最新的，最近的，一般用latest，他同时可以做late的最高级形式。
Late的用法
1、表现“迟”“晚”，可用作描述词和副词。如：
She told me that she would be late. 她告知我她会迟到。
He arrived late because of the storm. 由于暴风雨他迟到了。
He came in the late afternoon [late in the afternoon]. 他薄暮才来。
留意，不要以为 lately 是 late 的副词情势。
2、用于 be late (in) doing sth 或 be late with sth, 意为“做某事做晚了或做迟了”。如：
He was late (in) getting up this morning. 明天早上他起床起得迟。
We were late with lunch [in having lunch] today. 我们明天午饭吃得迟。
比拟：be late for 意为“做……迟到”。如：
I’ve never been late for work. 我下班历来没迟到过。
Hurry up, or you’ll be late for school. 赶紧，不然你上学就要迟到了。
3、表现迟到多久，普通用“一段时光+late”。如：
The train was five minutes late. 火车正点了5分钟。
The bus arrived ten minutes late. 公共汽车迟到了10分钟。
Bill finally rolled up two hours late. 比尔终于来了，迟到了两个小时。
later的用法
1、用作描述词和副词 late 的比拟级。如：
It’s rather later than I thought. 这比我想的还要晚。
He left home later than usual. 他比平凡还晚离家。
2、用于一段详细时光之后，表现从曩昔或未来算起的多长时光今后，但平日不指从如今算起的多久今后。如：
误：I’ll call again a week later.(可改为…in a week)
正：I called again a week later. 一周后我又打了德律风。
正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我将在3月5日给她打个德律风，过一周后我将再打个德律风。
然则later零丁应用(即不连器具体时光)，可以表现从如今算起的“今后”(具有泛指意义)。如：
Let’s stop now and finish it later. 如今停上去，今后再完成它。
He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. 他能够忙，如若如斯，我今后再来访问。
3、用于 later on，表现“今后”“后来”，可用于曩昔或未来。如：
We’ll discuss the matter later on. 我们今后将评论辩论这件事。
Later on he realized his mistake. 后来他熟悉到了本身的过错。
4、sooner or later 为习语，意为“迟早”，留意其词序不克不及倒过去。如：
You’ll know the truth sooner or later. 你迟早会晓得本相的。
Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. 你日夕得拿个主张。
